A bump key is cut to the lowest position on every cut, so when you seat it and strike the bow with a bump hammer, the kinetic energy snaps up through the key pins into the drivers. For a fraction of a second the gap opens at the shear line, and light turning pressure rotates the plug before the pins drop back. It is a real skill, not a magic trick. The cut has to match the keyway, the strike has to be controlled, and the turning hand has to catch the open moment. These keys give you the correct shape to learn that rhythm. How you use it Seat the key, apply light turn, strike Slide the bump key fully into the cylinder, then back it out one click so the pins sit above the cuts. Apply light, steady turning pressure with your finger or thumb on the bow. Strike the bow once with a bump hammer using a quick, controlled tap, and keep that turning pressure on through the strike. When the timing lands, the plug rotates and the lock gives. Most first frustration comes from too much turning pressure, a sloppy strike, or a key that does not match the keyway. Start light, reset between attempts, and let small adjustments do the work. Three patterns Why the set carries three keys One profileAll three are cut on the Reverse Universal profile used across a huge number of common pin tumbler locks. Three patternsEach key carries a slightly different bumping pattern, so you can switch keys to find the one that lands cleanest on a given lock. More chancesHaving three patterns to try raises your odds on locks that resist the first key, without changing your technique. Use bump keys only on locks you own or have written permission to open, and check the laws where you live. Practise on your own cylinders and training locks. Why this set Cut in-house, not stamped out cheap Made on the right profile Reverse Universal is the standard keyway profile found in millions of locks, so these keys fit a wide range of common cylinders. Questions Quick answers from the LockPickWorld bench What is a reverse universal bump key? It is a bump key cut on the Reverse Universal keyway profile, a standard shape used in a large share of common pin tumbler locks. The reverse cut suits many widely used cylinders. Why three keys instead of one? Each key carries a different bumping pattern on the same profile. Switching between them gives you more than one chance to land a clean bump on a stubborn lock. Do I need a special hammer? A controlled tap matters more than force. A purpose-made bump hammer makes that strike repeatable. You can start with a light tool, but a dedicated hammer and dampeners make learning much easier. Will it open any lock? No single tool opens everything. Bumping works best on standard pin tumbler cylinders that match the profile. Results still depend on the lock, its condition, and your timing, so practise on your own locks first. Learn the bump on the keys built for it Three precision-cut patterns on the standard Reverse Universal profile, ready to teach you the strike and the timing. Pair them with a bump hammer and a clear practice lock, work light and patient, and let the pins tell you when you have it.
