UHURU:1865 100% Cotton. Unisex. True to size. Uhuru is Swahili for FREEDOM THE DESIGN EXPLAINED: UHURU is a fictitious underground magazine set in slavery times. This issue, the Emancipation Issue, celebrates Juneteenth. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that they were free from the institution of slavery. However, tragically, this liberation came almost two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. As much as Juneteenth represents freedom, it also underscores the tragic delay of emancipation. The gentleman gracing the cover is Renty Taylor, an African man born in the Congo Basin. He was captured, enslaved, and brought to the United States, where he was sold as a slave. Taylor worked on the 'Edgehill' plantation in Columbia, South Carolina. He was one of the subjects of the oldest known slave photos, taken by Joseph T. Zealy under the supervision of Harvard biologist Louis Agassiz in March 1850. Agassiz's ideas were used to support the enslavement of Africans in the United States and promote white supremacy. This picture is part of the Public Domain."
