Black Moonstone — The Stone of Intuition and New Beginnings Black Moonstone is a captivating dark feldspar prized for its soft silvery sheen, mysterious appearance, and calming presence. While traditional moonstones are known for their pale glow, Black Moonstone offers a dramatic charcoal-to-black body color accented by flashes of silver, white, or subtle blue. Collectors appreciate its unique beauty, geological interest, and symbolic connection to personal growth, reflection, and fresh starts. AKA Dark Moonstone Black Feldspar (trade name) Black Adularia (occasionally) Sometimes confused or marketed alongside Larvikite or dark Labradorite Why Collectors Love It Collectors are drawn to Black Moonstone because it combines elegance with mystery. Its silky adularescence—the floating glow that seems to drift beneath the surface—creates a mesmerizing effect unlike almost any other gemstone. Every specimen is unique, with varying flashes, inclusions, and patterns that make each piece one-of-a-kind. Highlights Beautiful floating silver or bluish sheen Dark charcoal to nearly black body color Member of the feldspar family Durable enough for many jewelry applications Popular among mineral collectors and lapidary artists Attractive in polished freeforms, spheres, towers, palm stones, and cabochons Specifications Chemical Formula: Typically KAlSi₃O₈ (Orthoclase/Adularia varieties) Hardness: 6–6.5 on the Mohs Scale Crystal System: Monoclinic Luster: Vitreous to pearly Transparency: Opaque to translucent Cleavage: Perfect Fracture: Uneven to conchoidal Specific Gravity: Approximately 2.55–2.63 Localities Commercial Black Moonstone is commonly sourced from: India Madagascar Mexico Norway Sri Lanka (some material) Small deposits in other feldspar-rich regions around the world Geological Formation Black Moonstone forms deep within slowly cooling magma where feldspar minerals have time to develop large crystals. During cooling, microscopic layers of different feldspar compositions separate naturally. These internal layers scatter light, producing the famous floating glow known as adularescence. Mineralogy Information Black Moonstone belongs to the feldspar group—the most abundant mineral family in Earth’s crust. Depending on the material, it may consist primarily of orthoclase, adularia, microcline, or related feldspar varieties exhibiting adularescence. The trade name “Black Moonstone” is sometimes broadly applied to visually similar dark feldspars, making proper identification important. Key Features Soft floating internal glow Charcoal, gray, or nearly black coloration Pearly surface luster Smooth polished finish enhances optical effects Distinctive adularescence rather than flashy iridescence Natural inclusions often add character The Geological Era The feldspar minerals that make up Black Moonstone have formed throughout Earth’s geological history. Individual deposits typically crystallized during igneous events ranging from hundreds of millions to over one billion years ago, depending on the locality. Mineral Class Tectosilicate (Feldspar Group) Rock Formation Most Black Moonstone forms within: Granite pegmatites Igneous intrusive rocks Occasionally metamorphic environments where feldspars recrystallize Level of Rarity Black Moonstone is considered moderately available. While commercial material is readily obtainable, specimens displaying exceptional adularescence, minimal fractures, and attractive polish are significantly less common and more desirable among collectors. Historical and Folklore Stories Moonstone has been admired for thousands of years. Ancient Romans believed moonstone formed from solidified moonlight, while many cultures associated it with lunar deities, protection, intuition, and feminine energy. Although darker varieties became commercially popular much more recently, they have inherited many of the symbolic traditions associated with classic moonstone, often representing introspection, transformation, and the quiet strength found during life’s darker seasons. A Metaphysical Nod Many believe Black Moonstone encourages emotional balance, intuitive growth, and personal transformation. It is often associated with embracing change, trusting one’s instincts, and exploring inner wisdom during periods of transition. Many associate Black Moonstone with: Root Chakra Sacral Chakra Third Eye Chakra Crown Chakra Suggested affirmations include: “I trust my intuition with confidence.” “Every new beginning strengthens me.” “I welcome growth with courage and clarity.” “I move through change with wisdom and peace.” Display and Care Instructions Although reasonably durable, Black Moonstone should be handled with care because feldspar has perfect cleavage. Care recommendations: Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap. Dry with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Protect from sharp impacts. Store separately from harder gemstones like quartz or topaz. Display away from prolonged direct sunlight to preserve its polished appearance. How to Spot a Fake Authentic Black Moonstone displays a soft, internal glow that appears to float beneath the surface as the stone moves. Be cautious of: Dyed black quartz with unnatural color concentrations. Glass imitations that lack internal structure. Plastic pieces that feel unusually warm and lightweight. Dark labradorite or larvikite marketed as Black Moonstone, which often display brighter, more metallic flashes rather than the soft adularescence typical of moonstone. Buying from knowledgeable mineral dealers greatly increases the likelihood of receiving authentic material.
