True Ghost Stories

6W Cheiro (William John Warner). London: The London Publishing Company, 1928. Eighth edition.  Notes True Ghost Stories, first published in 1920, is a collection of supernatural accounts compiled by Cheiro, the pen name of William John Warner, a well-known figure in early twentieth-century occult circles. The book presents a series of purportedly true encounters with ghosts and unexplained phenomena, drawn from both Cheiro’s own experiences and those of his acquaintances. Written in a straightforward yet atmospheric style, the stories reflect the era’s fascination with spiritualism, the afterlife, and the possibility of unseen forces influencing the living. The collection blends anecdote with suspense, offering readers a glimpse into the popular interest in psychic phenomena during the period. Cheiro (1866–1936) was an Irish-born occultist, palmist, and numerologist who gained international fame for his consultations with prominent figures, including royalty, writers, and political leaders. His writings, which span subjects such as palmistry, numerology, and the supernatural, contributed to the widespread popularity of esoteric studies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. True Ghost Stories remains one of his more accessible works, capturing the intrigue and curiosity surrounding ghostly encounters and reflecting the broader cultural interest in the occult during his lifetime.
