A Willow with a Rainbow of Color If you want to plant a new shrub in your garden with colorful foliage, Tricolor Willow (Salix integra 'Hakuro-nashiki') will not disappoint! It's especially colorful in springtime, when the new growth puts on a spectacular display -- pink accents against variegated green-and-white foliage. But wait?…the show isn't over yet. In winter, this deciduous shrub sheds its leaves to reveal red stems that persist through winter, giving Tricolor willow year-round beauty! Low Maintenance with High Rewards You may think for the dazzling display this plant offers that it may be finicky, or require more care than most plants. But Tricolor Willow is an unbelievably low-maintenance plant. It can handle full sun or partial shade and it's a stellar performer in wet soils, a condition that often kills other plants. And you won't have to wait for this plant to fill a garden spot, because it's very fast-growing -- you can even use it en masse for a brilliant year-round hedge! A Rain Garden Gem Rain gardens are areas that can support plants tolerant of wet soils, which typically kill most garden plants. If there's a low-lying area in your yard?…or an area that simply doesn't drain quickly after rainstorms, plant Tricolor Willow '– it excels as a rain-garden plant! Pruning is Optional If you like a natural, unpruned look for plants in your garden, you'll never have to prune Tricolor Willow. But if you prefer a tidier, manicured look, you can cut this plant back as needed?…no tricky pruning rules to follow here. Just cut it back in late winter -- this way, when the new growth begins in spring, you'll see lots of pink shimmers all over the plant!
