Japanese Maple

Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) is a graceful small tree or large shrub that thrives in Willamette Valley gardens, offering forms from upright to laceleaf and showy spring and fall color; sizes range roughly 6–20' depending on cultivar. It prefers rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, morning sun or dappled shade (protect from hot afternoon sun and strong winds), needs regular summer watering and mulch to keep roots cool, and benefits from light pruning—ideal as a specimen, patio tree or understory accent.
