Memory foam was a breakthrough when it first appeared. The conforming softness, the way it cradled your head, the feeling of support without pressure. Then you slept on it for three months and started noticing the problems. The heat, mostly. Your head gets warm because the foam traps air instead of letting it move through. The chemical smell that was supposed to dissipate but keeps coming back faintly on warm nights. And the fact that you can’t adjust it. If the pillow is too thick or too thin, you’re stuck with it because it’s one solid block of material. Natural Talalay latex solves each of those problems specifically. The open-cell structure means air moves through the fill the way it moves through a sponge, so heat doesn’t accumulate against your skin. The material is rubber tree sap rather than petrochemical foam, so there’s no prolonged off-gassing (there’s a mild rubber scent for the first few days that clears completely). And because the latex is shredded into small pieces rather than formed into a single block, you can unzip the pillow and add or remove fill until the loft and firmness feel right. The feel is similar to memory foam in the ways that matter. Your head sinks slightly into the pillow. The surface conforms to your neck shape. There’s a gentle give when you press into it. The feel is different in the ways that make it better: the pillow pushes back slightly as you move, so your head doesn’t get locked into one position. You can shift during the night and the pillow adjusts with you instead of holding a groove from an hour ago. We use Talalay and not Dunlop because the two methods produce very different textures. Dunlop latex is denser and firmer, closer to what you’d find in a mattress. Talalay is whipped and aerated during processing, which creates a softer, fluffier, more pillow-like feel. If you’re coming from soft memory foam, Talalay is the transition that makes sense.
