What are traditional box braids? Traditional box braids are individual braids installed using the knotted method—meaning each braid is securely tied at the root with added braiding hair. This style creates a structured, long-lasting look that can be customized by braid size and length. Whether you want a bold, low-density style like jumbo box braids or a fuller, more versatile look with small braids, traditional box braids are a go-to for good reason: they’re timeless, low-maintenance, and protective. We don’t carry an extensive inventory of hair, so clients have to purchase their own. But we’ve created this guide if you need recommendations. How long does the install take? Timing depends on the size you choose. Jumbo braids may take 2–3 hours, while small braids can take 6–8 hours or more. The thickness of your hair and the speed of the stylist are also important factors. How long does the style last? Traditional box braids can last 4–8 weeks depending on the size and how well you care for them. Smaller braids generally last longer, while jumbo braids are lower commitment. But we generally recommend keeping protective styles in for four weeks max, to promote a healthy scalp and hair. Learn more here. Are small braids heavy? Generally, a knotless installation makes them lighter and more comfortable than traditional box braids, but weight depends on how full you get them. If you get small braids with small part, you’re braids will be fuller and thus heavier. If you get small braids with relatively larger parts, they’ll be less full. If your hair tends to break, we recommend not getting small box braids. Take this quiz to find out your hair’s resilience. How do I care for the style? Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet and use a light scalp oil 2–3x per week. Want a full care guide? Check out this article →
