Kiwi Jasper — The Stone of Nurturing Balance Kiwi Jasper is a cheerful, nature-inspired ornamental stone admired for its soothing mint-green colors accented by dark mineral speckles. Its refreshing appearance evokes images of lush landscapes and the inside of a kiwi fruit, making it a favorite among collectors, jewelry makers, and crystal enthusiasts alike. While often grouped with jaspers due to its appearance and durability, Kiwi Jasper is generally considered a quartz-rich rock composed primarily of Amazonite, quartz, feldspar, and dark inclusions of tourmaline or other minerals. Many appreciate it for its calming beauty and its association with emotional balance, renewal, and optimism. AKA Sesame Jasper Kiwi Stone Kiwi Quartz (trade name) Mint Jasper (occasionally) Green Sesame Stone Why Collectors Love It Collectors are drawn to Kiwi Jasper because every piece is wonderfully unique. Soft green backgrounds are sprinkled with contrasting black, gray, or white mineral inclusions, creating patterns reminiscent of kiwi fruit, moss-covered forests, or abstract paintings. Its gentle colors make it an attractive decorative stone while its durability makes it ideal for everyday jewelry, carvings, palm stones, and spheres. Many collectors also appreciate its peaceful aesthetic that pairs beautifully with nearly every mineral collection. Highlights Soft mint-green to pale seafoam coloration Distinctive black, gray, or white speckled inclusions Excellent polish Durable enough for jewelry and decorative objects Pleasant, earthy appearance Popular among crystal collectors and lapidary artists Often associated with emotional balance and gentle encouragement Specifications Primary Composition: Quartz, feldspar, Amazonite, and dark mineral inclusions Color: Pale green, mint green, cream, white, gray, and black Luster: Vitreous to waxy when polished Transparency: Opaque Mohs Hardness: Approximately 6.5–7 Specific Gravity: Approximately 2.60–2.75 Fracture: Uneven to conchoidal Cleavage: Generally absent due to its quartz-rich composition Localities Commercial Kiwi Jasper is sourced primarily from: New Zealand (trade inspiration for the name, though not always the source) Brazil Madagascar South Africa India China Individual deposits and commercial sources may vary, as “Kiwi Jasper” is a trade name rather than a formal geological classification. Geological Formation Kiwi Jasper forms over millions of years through complex geological processes involving silica-rich fluids, volcanic activity, and metamorphism. As mineral-rich groundwater moves through fractures and porous rock, quartz and feldspar crystallize alongside darker accessory minerals. Pressure, heat, and mineral replacement gradually produce the distinctive mottled appearance that makes Kiwi Jasper so recognizable. Mineralogy Information Although sold as a type of jasper, Kiwi Jasper is better described as a quartz-rich ornamental rock rather than a true geological jasper. Many specimens contain: Quartz Feldspar Amazonite Tourmaline Biotite Various amphiboles and accessory minerals The exact mineral composition varies between deposits, contributing to differences in color and pattern. Key Features Refreshing kiwi-like coloration Fine dark speckled inclusions Attractive natural patterns Excellent durability Takes a beautiful polish Every specimen is unique Suitable for carvings, cabochons, spheres, towers, and jewelry The Geological Era The minerals found within Kiwi Jasper formed over long periods of Earth’s history, with many host rocks dating from the Precambrian through younger metamorphic and igneous events. The exact age depends on the specific deposit. Mineral Class Kiwi Jasper is generally classified as an ornamental silica-rich rock composed primarily of quartz and feldspar with accessory minerals. It does not fit neatly into a single mineral class because it consists of multiple minerals rather than one individual mineral species. Rock Formation Kiwi Jasper is considered a metamorphic to hydrothermal ornamental rock depending on its origin. Heat, pressure, silica-rich fluids, and mineral replacement create the attractive mixture of colors and textures seen in finished specimens. Level of Rarity Kiwi Jasper is considered fairly common in today’s gemstone market. While attractive material is readily available, exceptionally vibrant colors, highly contrasting patterns, and large flawless carving-grade pieces are considerably less common and are prized by collectors. Historical or Folklore Stories Surrounding It Unlike many ancient gemstones, Kiwi Jasper has little documented historical folklore because it is a relatively modern trade stone. Its popularity has grown primarily over the last few decades within the lapidary and crystal communities. Modern crystal enthusiasts often associate its soft green coloration with renewal, springtime, compassion, and harmony. The speckled appearance is sometimes viewed as representing life’s balance between light and dark experiences, encouraging resilience and personal growth. Metaphysical Nod Many believe Kiwi Jasper encourages emotional stability, optimism, and inner peace during periods of stress or transition. It is often associated with gently restoring emotional energy while promoting patience, kindness, and self-care. Many associate Kiwi Jasper with the Heart Chakra, believing it encourages compassion, forgiveness, emotional healing, and stronger connections with others. Some also associate it with the Root Chakra, suggesting it offers grounding while maintaining emotional openness. Common affirmations include: I welcome peace into every part of my life. My heart remains open while my spirit stays grounded. I embrace growth with patience and confidence. Balance flows naturally through me. I move forward with calm strength. Display and Care Instructions Kiwi Jasper is relatively durable and easy to maintain. Care recommendations: Dust regularly using a soft microfiber cloth. Wash gently with mild soap and lukewarm water when necessary. Dry thoroughly after cleaning. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals. Store separately from harder gemstones to minimize scratching. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which may gradually dull some colors over many years. Display away from areas with repeated impacts or vibration. How to Spot a Fake Because Kiwi Jasper is relatively affordable, outright counterfeiting is uncommon. However, buyers should watch for: Dyed stones with unnaturally bright green coloring Printed or painted surface patterns Plastic or resin imitations that feel unusually lightweight Air bubbles indicating glass or resin Repeating identical patterns across multiple pieces Sellers using misleading names without disclosing treatments Natural Kiwi Jasper should display irregular mineral inclusions, subtle variations in color, and authentic stone texture. No two genuine pieces will ever be exactly alike. Why Trust Wandering Stones At Wandering Stones, we believe every specimen tells a story millions of years in the making.
