This concert poster by legendary Santa Cruz artist Jim Phillips announces Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' six-night residency at San Francisco's Fillmore in January of the late 1990s. Phillips' fantastical imagery features a glamorous green mermaid emerging from crashing waves, her sparkling tail catching the light as she poses against a crimson sky punctuated by the Golden Gate Bridge silhouette. The elaborate baroque frame, complete with carved grotesque faces, pays homage to both Victorian theatrical posters and the psychedelic heritage of the Fillmore itself. Produced by Bill Graham Presents and printed by Great Impressions, this is Fillmore poster number 253 in the venue's ongoing series. Phillips, best known for his iconic skateboard graphics including the Screaming Hand, brings his signature blend of the beautiful and the bizarre to this commission. The rich emerald greens and deep burgundy reds create a sumptuous palette that captures the theatrical glamour of a Petty performance. A standout piece for collectors of San Francisco rock history, representing the continuation of the city's legendary poster art tradition into the modern era.
