Tillandsia ionantha 'Ron'

This exceptional cultivar of the beloved T. ionantha species represents the perfect fusion of form and function. We acquired this stunning specimen from Ron Herndon in Homestead, CA, in the 1990s, and it has since earned its place as a collector's favorite through its distinctive recurving leaves and impressive size potential. Key Features: Thick, succulent leaves that elegantly recurve to form a perfect spherical shape Dramatic color transformation from silvery-green to peachy tones when blooming Substantial mature size up to 12cm in diameter Striking violet tubular flowers emerge from a deep red center during blooming In its mature form, 'Ron' presents as a living sculpture, with multiple scurfed leaves arranged in a mesmerizing spiral pattern. Each leaf is thick and succulent, covered in fine trichomes that create a frosted appearance. The natural decurving habit creates a nearly perfect ball shape, making each specimen appear as if it was meticulously crafted by an artist. Collector's Note: This cultivar represents a more robust and architectural form compared to the standard T. ionantha. While it shares characteristics with T. ionantha var. vanhyningii, 'Ron' maintains its own distinct, more compact growth pattern, making it a unique addition to any serious collection. Care Requirements: Bright, indirect light with some direct morning sun Allow to dry completely between thorough waterings Good air circulation is essential Benefits from higher humidity but tolerates average household conditions Ideal For: Serious Tillandsia collectors seeking rare cultivars Modern minimalist design enthusiasts Those who appreciate slow-growing specimen plants Beginners looking for a forgiving yet impressive airplant Display Recommendations: Mount individually on a light-colored background to showcase its perfect symmetry, or create a striking arrangement by grouping several at different stages of maturity. The spherical form is particularly effective when displayed at eye level. Transform your space with this living sculpture - T. ionantha 'Ron' offers all the charm of the classic T. ionantha but with an architectural twist that sets it apart. Its perfect spherical form and dramatic coloring make it a centerpiece-worthy addition to any collection. Bromeliad Society International page for T. ionantha 'Ron'
