Tillandsia chiapensis

Native to the misty cloud forests of Chiapas, Mexico, this remarkable epiphyte grows at elevations between 1,200-1,800 meters. We at Rainforest Flora are proud to offer this uncommon specimen, prized for its striking appearance and architectural form that creates a commanding presence in any collection. Key Features: Elegant rosette of broad, bright green leaves that form a perfect symmetrical shape Impressive mature size of up to 60cm in diameter Spectacular branched inflorescence reaching 50-60cm tall Striking contrast between vivid green foliage and vibrant pink to purple bracts Long-lasting blooms featuring delicate violet-blue flowers Unlike many xeric tillandsias, T. chiapensis presents with smooth, glossy leaves that show minimal trichome coverage, giving it a lush, tropical appearance. The broad, sword-shaped leaves arrange themselves in a graceful rosette that captures and funnels water to the plant's center. When in bloom, the tall inflorescence erupts from the center, displaying multiple branches adorned with colorful bracts and tubular flowers that create a dramatic visual display lasting for several weeks. Collector's Note: Tillandsia chiapensis represents a fascinating evolutionary adaptation to its cloud forest habitat. Its growth habit bridges the gap between traditional atmospheric tillandsias and tank-forming bromeliads, making it a compelling addition for collectors interested in the diversity of bromeliad adaptations. While less common in cultivation than many smaller tillandsias, it rewards patient growers with its impressive size and spectacular blooming display. Care Requirements: Bright, filtered light – avoid intense direct sun Higher humidity than most xeric tillandsias Regular watering with good air circulation Benefits from occasional foliar feeding Protect from freezing temperatures Ideal For: Serious Tillandsia enthusiasts seeking statement specimens Collectors focused on cloud forest species Interior designers creating dramatic focal points Experienced growers ready for a rewarding challenge Display Recommendations: Mount on a substantial piece of driftwood or cork bark where its architectural form can be fully appreciated. Alternatively, grow in a shallow container with excellent drainage using a minimal growing medium. Its impressive size makes it perfect as a standalone specimen in bright bathrooms or humid spaces. Elevate your collection with this cloud forest masterpiece – T. chiapensis brings the lush beauty of Chiapas' misty mountains into your space, offering a striking counterpoint to more common silver-leaved tillandsias with its vibrant green crown and spectacular blooming display.
