Thunder and Lightning Pincushion Flower

Thunder and Lightning Pincushion Flower (Knautia macedonica 'Thunder and Lightning')Thunder and Lightning pincushion flower adds crisp variegated foliage and a long run of rich, pincushion blooms to sunny gardens. Its compact, mounded base stays neat, making borders and containers look finished even before the flowers peak. From early summer into fall, wiry stems hold reddish-purple blooms that float above the foliage and keep the planting lively. If you want strong color and texture in a smaller footprint, this is an easy, high-impact perennial. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection stands out for light green leaves edged in creamy white, creating a bright, clean look all season. Slender, branching stems rise above the mound with pincushion-style flowers in deep reddish-purple to dark magenta tones through summer and often into early fall. The airy bloom stems add movement without flopping, and the flowers are highly attractive to butterflies. Good winter drainage is important for long-term performance, especially in colder regions. Low Maintenance Care Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to extend flowering and keep plants looking crisp. Watering: Water during the first season to establish roots, then water during extended drought. Pruning: Shear lightly after a heavy flush to refresh growth and encourage more bloom. Drainage: Keep crowns on the dry side in winter by prioritizing sharp drainage and avoiding heavy, wet mulch. Division: Divide every few years if the center thins to maintain vigor and expand plantings. Why Choose Thunder and Lightning Pincushion Flower?
