Three Thirsty Crows, Early 1900s

This charming rhyme and illustration is dated in the early 1900s and was used to promote Hires Root Beer. It features three thirsty crows sitting on a branch and eyeing a little boy below, who has fallen asleep and who has a glass of the popular beverage. Hires Root Beer was created by pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires, from Philadelphia. Introduced in 1876, it was first marketed as a health drink, with claims that it could purify the blood and put the roses back in pale cheeks. Courtesy Private Collection.
