The production famously replaced original star Eric Stoltz with Michael J. Fox after five weeks of filming, requiring the entire movie to be reshot while Fox simultaneously worked 18-hour days filming his TV series Family Ties. The DeLorean time machine was chosen because its gull-wing doors looked futuristic, and the car's stainless steel body would help sell the idea of a "flux capacitor" needing unusual materials. The film became the highest-grossing movie of 1985, spawned two sequels, and introduced phrases like "Great Scott!" and "1.21 gigawatts" into the pop culture lexicon.
