Quick Facts: ABV: 14.5%  |  Origin: Napa Valley, California  |  Varietal: Merlot-dominant blend  |  Producer: The Prisoner Wine Company Production & Heritage The Prisoner Wine Company, known for its boundary-pushing approach to California winemaking, sources Thorn from small vineyard lots of Merlot that survived the widespread replanting to Cabernet Sauvignon across Napa Valley. This focus on remnant, often older plantings gives the wine a character rooted in scarcity. The blend is Merlot-dominant — approximately 80% in certain vintages — rounded out with supporting portions of varieties such as Syrah, Petite Sirah, Malbec, and Petite Verdot, then aged in a combination of French and Hungarian oak barrels to build structure and complexity. Tasting Notes Aroma: Earthy tones give way to layers of cocoa, blackberry, cedar, and anise. There is a quiet warmth of sweet baking spices underneath, drawing you into the glass. Taste: The entry is smooth and plush, with cherry and dark chocolate meeting vanilla and mild toastiness at mid-palate. As the wine opens up, pronounced flavors of rich plum, mocha, and dried red berries emerge, filling a generous, full mid-palate. Finish: Sturdy and lengthy, with lingering notes of dark fruit and cocoa. The oak influence provides a subtle cedary grip that extends well beyond the final sip. How to Drink Thorn Merlot This wine is at its best when served at around 60–65°F, either on its own or after 20–30 minutes of decanting to let the darker fruit notes fully unfold. It also performs well in wine-forward cocktails and rich pours: Classic Sangria: The dark fruit and spice profile anchors a sangria with orange, cinnamon, and brandy without losing its depth. Kalimotxo: The plush body and chocolate undertones hold up against cola for a surprisingly balanced Basque-inspired highball. Mulled Wine: Cedar, anise, and baking spice notes already present in the glass make it a natural starting point for a warm winter pour. Thorn Merlot leads with dark fruit — blackberry, plum, and cherry — layered with cocoa, mocha, vanilla, and warm baking spices. The palate is soft and plush with a full mid-palate and a lengthy, oak-tinged finish. How does Thorn Merlot compare to Duckhorn Merlot? Both are prominent Napa Valley Merlots, but Thorn leans into darker fruit, cocoa, and spice from its multi-varietal blending and Hungarian oak aging, while Duckhorn typically showcases a more classically structured, fruit-forward Merlot profile. Thorn's sourcing from surviving small Merlot lots also gives it a distinct vineyard-driven identity. Is Thorn Merlot good for sipping neat? Yes — the smooth entry, full mid-palate, and lengthy finish make it well-suited for drinking on its own, ideally after brief decanting to let the darker aromas develop. Where is Thorn Merlot made? Thorn Merlot is produced by The Prisoner Wine Company using fruit sourced from small, premium vineyard lots throughout Napa Valley, California. What foods pair well with Thorn Merlot? Braised short ribs match the wine's plush dark fruit and oak structure. Grilled lamb chops complement its cedar and spice notes. Dark chocolate desserts echo the cocoa and mocha character. Aged hard cheeses like Gruyère balance the wine's richness, and mushroom risotto aligns with its earthy undertones. What sizes does Thorn Merlot come in? Thorn Merlot is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle. Is Thorn Merlot worth the price? Thorn positions as a premium Napa Valley Merlot, and its track record of critical recognition — including 92 points from Wine Spectator — places it firmly among well-regarded options in its price tier. The sourcing from rare surviving Merlot lots adds a layer of distinction not common at this level. Why Thorn Merlot? What sets Thorn apart is its origin story: the small Napa Valley Merlot plantings that were never uprooted during the industry's rush to Cabernet Sauvignon. These surviving lots, often from older vines, provide concentrated fruit that forms the backbone of the blend. Aging in both French and Hungarian oak adds complexity without overwhelming the varietal character, and the addition of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Malbec, and Petite Verdot gives the wine a structural depth that pure Merlot bottlings often lack. With a Wine Spectator 92-point score and Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition across past vintages, Thorn has established itself as a serious argument for Merlot's continued relevance in Napa Valley.
