Thoreau

Maximilien Le Roy (writer) A. Dan (art) "To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity and trust." This graphic novel biography relates the forward looking inspirational life of the great author, philosopher and pioneering ecologist. Henry David Thoreau was also the father of the concept, still fresh today (viz 'Occupy Wall St.'), of 'civil disobedience' which he used against slavery and the encroachment of government. REVIEWS: "Naturalistically lovely, lyrically composed and sweetly sensible: highlighting key moments of introspection, inspiration and revelation from one of the world's earliest ecologists and most-revered rebel rationalists. Clever, wise and passionate, this is a fabulous and welcoming treatment of a forward-looking individual increasingly in tune with the times and the people." Win Wiacek, NOW READ THIS! "Recommended! Complimentary but thoughtful take on the life of Thoreau." -School Library Connection "A necessary and valuable addition to the literature about Thoreau." -Foreword "This lovely book breathes new life into Thoreau and returns to him his true depth, which has been overlooked in recent impressions. A worthy addition to any library that includes Thoreau's works." -Library Journal starred review "I was surprised by how beautiful and informative this graphic biography was. Definitely something to check out if you're interested in philosophy or civil disobedience or giving it all up to run away to the woods. By subsuming the reader in Thoreau's day-to-day existence, his concerns come alive not as historical, in the years leading up to the Civil War, but as relevant to those seeking authenticity today. It's a heady experience, being so caught up in another's life so effectively." -Johanna Draper Carlson, Comics Worth Reading "Perfectly captures the essence of one of our greatest thinkers. I have read more than my fair share of biographical works presented in comic book or graphic novel form over the years, but this slim volume is the most effective argument for the power of the medium in telling the story of a person's life." -William Kulesa, Jersey Journal/NJ.com "Beautifully captures the essence of its subject and the wild times in early America that formed his philosophy. Dan and Le Roy breathe life into this remarkable retelling." -Richard Pachter, Miami Herald "Dan and Le Roy restore a luminous fire to one of America's most stirring writers of conscience." -Publishers Weekly 8 ½ x 11, 88pp, full color hardcover, $19.99 ISBN 9781681120256
