The White Dragon

5C Logi Southby. London: The Griffon Press Ltd., 1934. First Edition.  Notes The White Dragon by Logi Southby is a children’s picture book that tells a gentle, imaginative story centered on a mysterious white dragon. Rather than being frightening, the dragon is often portrayed as calm and wise, inviting themes of curiosity, understanding, and kindness. Through simple language and evocative illustrations, the book encourages young readers to look beyond appearances and to approach the unknown with empathy instead of fear. Like many classic children’s stories, it blends fantasy with a quiet moral lesson, making it memorable and comforting rather than dramatic or intense. The illustrations in The White Dragon by Logi Southby are a standout feature of the book and reflect its era and artistic care. Southby himself created the artwork, and the first edition includes around ten full-page color plates printed with a pochoir technique—a hand-colored stencil print method used in high-quality art books of the early 20th century—which gives the images rich, vivid colors and an elegant, handcrafted feel. These color plates are interspersed throughout the text and sometimes framed separately at the beginning and end of chapters, with an extra set included in a pocket at the back for framing. In addition to the main color plates, there are smaller illustrations at the start and finish of chapters, adding visual interest and helping bring the fantasy story of princes and dragons to life for readers. Description Black canvas binding and boards. White lettering and illustration on the cover. 10 colored plates for framing in envelope in the back of the book. Very good Condition.
