The film's stylized gangs—including the iconic Baseball Furies with their painted faces and the roller-skating Punks—created an unforgettable visual language that's been referenced in countless subsequent works. The production faced real danger, with cast and crew threatened by actual gangs during New York location shooting. Though initially controversial for allegedly inspiring gang violence, The Warriors has been recognized as a brilliant piece of pop mythology and inspired a cult following, video games, and passionate fan communities.
