The Springfield 186 (45mm)

What Makes The Springfield 186 Unique:  The Springfield 186 captures the refined character that made Illinois one of America's most respected watch manufacturers during the early twentieth century, while featuring a dial unlike any other in the Vortic collection. Built around a 17-jewel Illinois movement manufactured in 1916, this watch represents an era when dependable engineering was paired with thoughtful artistry. Although the movement delivers the reliable performance collectors expect from Illinois, it is the rare heraldic dial that immediately distinguishes this piece. The first thing collectors will notice is the warm golden dial, whose subtle-yet-rich patina has matured beautifully over more than a century while preserving its remarkable detail. Bold black Roman numerals frame the dial with understated elegance, complemented by finely blued Breguet hands that provide a striking contrast against the warm background. Just beneath the 12 o'clock position sits a beautifully hand-painted heraldic crest bearing the Greek letters ΖΗΤΑ ΑΛΦΑ ΕΨΙΛΟΝ (Zeta Alpha Epsilon). Research indicates the emblem belonged to a local fraternity at the University of Akron during the early twentieth century, making this watch a fascinating surviving piece of collegiate history. Personalized fraternity dials of this quality are exceptionally uncommon today, preserving not only a remarkable work of enamel artistry but also a tangible connection to the life and achievements of the watch's original owner. While the exact recipient remains unknown, the crest transforms this watch from a fine Illinois timepiece into a uniquely personal historical artifact. A recessed sub-seconds register at six o'clock completes the balanced layout, surrounded by a crisp printed scale that reflects the precision-focused heritage of American watchmaking. Turning the watch over reveals the original 17-jewel Illinois movement beneath the sapphire exhibition caseback. Collectors will appreciate the beautifully damaskeened bridges, gold jewel settings, polished steel winding wheels, and exposed balance assembly, all showcasing the level of finishing Illinois routinely applied during this period. The intricate radial striping and engraved details remain wonderfully preserved, highlighting the craftsmanship that helped establish Illinois as one of the premier American watch manufacturers of the early twentieth century. Vortic has carefully preserved this historic movement within its 45mm Springfield case, crafted from tumbled Grade 5 titanium and paired with a matching tumbled titanium bezel. The lightweight titanium construction gives the watch an understated modern presence while allowing the warmth of the dial to remain the focal point. A bronze crown adds a subtle vintage accent, while the American-made Tan leather strap complements the dial's rich golden tones, creating a cohesive design that feels both historic and contemporary. The Springfield 186 is a celebration of American craftsmanship and personal history. Its rare heraldic dial, richly aged golden finish, blued Breguet hands, beautifully decorated Illinois movement, and lightweight titanium case come together to create a one-of-a-kind timepiece that tells a story extending well beyond its mechanical heritage.
