The Springfield 181 (45mm)

What Makes The Springfield 181 Unique:  The Springfield 181 carries the unmistakable character that only a century of honest use can create. Manufactured in 1918, this 17-jewel Illinois movement represents the company’s commitment to precision during one of the most significant periods in American industrial history. While many vintage watches strive to appear untouched by time, this one embraces it. The original dial has developed a rich, naturally aged patina that tells the story of decades spent faithfully keeping time, giving the Springfield 181 a personality that simply cannot be replicated. Collectors will immediately notice the beautifully weathered silver dial, where soft toning, subtle discoloration, and fine age marks create a finish unique to this individual watch. Bold black Roman numerals remain remarkably crisp against the aged surface, while the recessed sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock preserves the classic symmetry expected from early Illinois dress watches. Completing the display are the original blued-steel Breguet-style hands, whose deep blue finish continues to catch the light more than a century after they were first installed. Turning the watch over reveals the movement that makes this piece equally compelling from the back. The 17-jewel Illinois movement features gracefully curved finger bridges, polished winding wheels, gold jewel settings, and a refined regulator assembly, all hallmarks of the thoughtful finishing that defined Illinois craftsmanship during the early twentieth century. The open bridge architecture provides an excellent view of the exposed gear train and balance, allowing the mechanical artistry of the movement to remain on full display. The Springfield 181 is housed in Vortic’s 45mm black DLC-coated 316L stainless steel Springfield case, creating a striking contrast with the warm, naturally aged dial. A sandblasted Grade 5 titanium bezel introduces another layer of texture, while the pre-patinated bronze crown complements the vintage tones developed across the dial over more than a century. Finished with an American-made Black leather strap, the overall composition balances modern materials with authentic antique character in a way that feels both intentional and timeless. Rather than hiding the passage of time, the Springfield 181 celebrates it. Its naturally patinated dial, original blued hands, and beautifully preserved Illinois movement combine to create a watch that wears its history proudly, offering collectors an authentic glimpse into American watchmaking as it existed over one hundred years ago.
