The Springfield 172 (45mm)

What Makes The Springfield 172 Unique: The Springfield 172 is defined by its texture and depth, anchored by a dial that carries both structure and age with equal presence. The vertically striped dial immediately draws attention, its linear brushing creating a subtle rhythm across the surface while highlighting the natural patina that has developed over time. Darkened edges and scattered spotting give the dial a lived-in character, the kind of honest wear that collectors look for rather than shy away from. Bold black Arabic numerals remain clear and legible against the textured backdrop, maintaining strong contrast while preserving the watch’s original functionality. At 6 o’clock, a recessed sub-seconds register introduces a secondary layer, its circular graining and slightly warmer tone adding visual separation from the striped main dial. The handset complements the dial with a more delicate, almost ornamental profile, featuring subtle shaping that contrasts nicely with the otherwise utilitarian layout. Together, these elements create a balance between industrial precision and early 20th-century design nuance, giving the watch a presence that feels both purposeful and refined. Inside, this watch is powered by a 19-jewel Illinois movement manufactured in 1923, representing a higher-grade offering from one of America’s most respected watchmakers of the era. Through the open caseback, the movement reveals Geneva striping across the bridges, polished steel components, and gold-toned gears that provide contrast against the cooler metal finishes. The increased jewel count reflects a focus on improved efficiency and longevity, while the finishing details highlight the pride taken in both performance and presentation. The layout of the 12-size movement remains compact yet highly legible, offering a clear view of the gear train and balance assembly in motion. The watch is housed in our Version 3 stainless steel case, finished with a clean machined surface that provides a crisp, modern frame for the vintage dial. A matching stainless steel bezel surrounds the dial with a precise, understated edge, while the machined crown—positioned at 12 o’clock—preserves the original pocket watch orientation. This configuration remains a defining characteristic of converted pieces, maintaining a direct connection to how the movement was originally designed to function. The watch is paired with a black leather strap, whose simplicity allows the dial’s texture and patina to take center stage. By 1923, Illinois Watch Company had established itself as a leader in American watchmaking, producing movements known for their reliability and thoughtful finishing. Pieces like this reflect a period where functionality was paramount, but aesthetic details were never ignored. The Springfield 172 carries that legacy forward, combining a richly textured dial, a higher-grade movement, and a design that rewards a closer look the longer you spend with it.
