The Springfield 169 (45mm)

What Makes The Springfield 169 Unique: The Springfield 169 is defined by contrast and texture, centered around a dial that immediately draws the eye inward. The outer portion of the dial presents a soft, aged parchment tone with scattered spotting and natural wear, giving the surface a distinctly timeworn character. Bold black Arabic numerals remain clear and legible against this lighter background, their sharp edges providing structure around the dial’s perimeter. Toward the center, however, the dial shifts dramatically—revealing a richly textured, gold-toned circular field that introduces both depth and warmth. This inner section creates a striking visual contrast against the more restrained outer dial, giving the watch a layered composition that feels both deliberate and entirely unique. At 6 o’clock, a recessed sub-seconds register adds further depth, with its finely printed track maintaining clarity against the surrounding textures. The original blued-steel hands sweep across both surfaces, their deep tone standing out crisply against the lighter dial while maintaining balance against the richer center. The interplay between the dark hands, light outer dial, and warm central tone gives the watch a dynamic presence that shifts subtly depending on the light. Inside, this watch is powered by a 17-jewel Illinois movement manufactured in 1923. Through the open caseback, the movement reveals a structured arrangement of striped bridges, polished steel components, and gold-toned gears that create a balanced mechanical composition. Subtle engraving across the bridges adds texture, while the exposed balance assembly provides a steady, rhythmic focal point. Illinois movements from this period were known for their reliability and thoughtful construction, built to deliver consistent performance while maintaining a refined level of finishing. The watch is housed in our Version 3 stainless steel case, finished with a clean machined texture that gives the metal a defined, architectural presence. A matching machined stainless steel bezel frames the dial with restraint, allowing the layered textures to remain the focal point. The titanium crown offers a slight tonal contrast and a confident, tactile grip when winding. The movement has been reoriented within the case, placing the crown at 3 o’clock for a natural wristwatch experience compared to its original pocket watch configuration. The watch is paired with a tobacco leather strap, whose warm, earthy tone complements the dial’s golden center while grounding the overall palette. In 1923, American watchmaking was entering a period of refinement, where companies like Illinois were producing movements that balanced durability with increasingly thoughtful design. Dials from this era occasionally experimented with layered finishes and tonal contrast, offering subtle variations within otherwise traditional layouts. The Springfield 169 reflects that moment of quiet evolution—preserving a movement and dial that push just beyond standard design while remaining rooted in the principles of clarity and precision.
