The Snail

Award-winning illustrator Emily Hughes presents a striking picture book chronicling the life of Isamu Noguchi, a celebrated Japanese American sculptor. Noguchi’s innovative Akari lamps transformed modern architectural lighting, yet his journey began as a child navigating complex cultural identities. Born in the United States and raised in Japan, Noguchi often felt like an outsider in both places. He embraced the metaphor of a snail, retreating into his creative shell when faced with exclusion. This book offers a thoughtful portrait of an artist who illuminated the world despite personal challenges.
