6b Henry David Thoreau. Edited by F. B. Sanborn. Boston: Charles E. Goodspeed, 1902. No. 92/500. Notes Written by Henry David Thoreau in 1840, this short essay was originally submitted to Margaret Fuller for publication in the famous Transcendentalist magazine The Dial, but it was famously rejected for being too abstract. The manuscript remained completely unpublished for over sixty years until it was carefully recovered and edited by Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, the last surviving member of Thoreau's intimate Concord literary circle. The text delivers a powerful, highly poetic philosophical manifesto on individual moral resistance, framing the human soul not as a passive observer, but as an active, courageous soldier destined to fight for spiritual independence and cosmic harmony. Printed at the legendary Merrymount Press under the direct typographic supervision of D.B. Updike, this specific volume is a magnificent showcase of early 20th-century fine press design. For collectors specializing in American literature, early philosophy, and fine press printings, this beautifully preserved limited edition represents a valuable documentation of the definitive first public appearance of Thoreau's earliest essay on non-violent resistance.
