The Pale Rosé by Sacha Lichine is a Provence IGP Var rosé blended from Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah, bottled at 12.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. The 2020 vintage earned 93 points from The Tasting Panel, and the 2023 vintage received a Gold medal at the Sakura Awards — recognition that places it among the top-rated IGP Var wines. Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5%  |  Origin: Provence, IGP Var, France  |  Style: Dry Rosé  |  Winery: Château d'Esclans Production & Heritage The Pale is produced at Château d'Esclans in Provence under the direction of Sacha Lichine, a figure widely credited with elevating Provençal rosé to global prominence. The grapes — predominantly Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah — are harvested at night to preserve freshness and natural acidity, then placed into small 22-pound crates to prevent the weight of fruit from crushing the lower layers prematurely. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine is subsequently aged on its lees, a step that contributes additional texture and complexity to the finished blend. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with candied orange peel and mineral-touched white flowers. Beneath that initial impression, fresh strawberry and hints of lilac emerge with time in the glass. Taste: On the palate, the entry is bright and succulent, led by pink grapefruit and wild strawberry. The mid-palate introduces a subtle meringue-like sweetness tempered by cherry pith, while a dynamic streak of crushed stone minerality runs through the center. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity, the wine maintains a vivid, linear development. Finish: The finish is clean and approachable, landing on notes of melon and lilac before trailing off. It leans short but stays precise, leaving a gentle mineral imprint. How to Drink The Pale Serve well chilled, ideally between 45–50°F, in a standard wine glass to let the aromatics open gradually. The Pale is a versatile rosé that performs well both as an aperitif and alongside food. It works beautifully in a Frosé, where its berry and citrus profile intensifies when frozen and blended. A French 75 variation using The Pale in place of Champagne adds a Provençal twist with rounder fruit character. For a simple warm-weather spritz, combine it with sparkling water and a grapefruit wheel for a Rosé Spritzer that highlights the wine's natural acidity. Best For Warm-weather entertaining and garden parties where a crowd-pleasing, chilled rosé sets the tone Gifting to a rosé enthusiast who already knows Whispering Angel and wants to explore further Pairing with a summer seafood spread — grilled shrimp, oysters, or chilled crab An everyday Provence rosé that delivers quality without requiring a special occasion Frequently Asked Questions What does The Pale taste like? The Pale is a dry, medium-bodied rosé with dominant flavors of fresh strawberry, pink grapefruit, and wild red currants, underscored by a crushed-stone minerality and balanced acidity. How does The Pale compare to Whispering Angel? Both wines come from Sacha Lichine and share a dry, savory style built around small red berry fruit. Whispering Angel is generally considered to have slightly more finesse and complexity, while The Pale positions as a more accessible, everyday expression at a lower price tier. Is The Pale good for beginners? Yes — its bright fruit character, clean acidity, and approachable finish make it an excellent entry point for anyone exploring Provence rosé for the first time. Where is The Pale made? The Pale is produced at Château d'Esclans in the Var department of Provence, southern France, under the IGP Var designation. What foods pair well with The Pale? Grilled Mediterranean vegetables complement its herbal minerality. Fresh goat cheese highlights the wine's acidity and fruit. Seared scallops or shrimp match its medium body without overpowering it. A Niçoise salad echoes its Provençal origins, and charcuterie boards with mild cured meats balance the wine's bright berry notes. What sizes does The Pale come in? The Pale is most commonly available in the standard 750ml bottle, with some markets also carrying a 1.5L magnum format. Is The Pale worth the price? The Pale positions as an accessible, everyday Provence rosé — a step below Whispering Angel in Lichine's portfolio but still delivering the hallmarks of quality Provençal winemaking, including night harvesting and lees aging, at a value-driven price point. Why The Pale? Night harvesting is not just a marketing detail — it materially preserves the delicate aromatics and natural acidity that define high-quality Provence rosé, and it is a practice more commonly associated with premium tiers. The additional step of lees aging in stainless steel gives The Pale a textural dimension that many wines at this level lack. With 93 points from The Tasting Panel for its 2020 vintage and a Sakura Awards Gold for the 2023 vintage, the wine has demonstrated consistency across multiple years. For drinkers who appreciate the dry, mineral-driven Provençal style but want a bottle they can open on a weeknight without hesitation, The Pale delivers exactly that.
