The Osprey's Stare

The StoryAn osprey wheels overhead, wings thrown into a deep V, and for a single beat it turns its head and looks straight down the lens. The stare is unmistakable — gold iris, the dark bandit's mask, the barred tail fanned against a wash of open sky. Chris Michael works in candid moments like this one, waiting for the instant a wild animal acknowledges you before it banks away and is gone. The LocationFew birds embody the Chesapeake like the osprey. Each spring they return to the Bay's rivers, marshes, and channel markers by the thousands, one of the largest breeding populations on Earth, to fish the shallows and raise their young on stick nests above the water. To watch one hunt the tidal flats is to watch the estuary's recovery written in a single silhouette. Artist's PerspectiveConnection is the thread that runs through Chris Michael's work, and he returns again and again to the moment a subject looks back. Here an osprey observing from above turns its head to the lens, the kind of candid, eye-level meeting his documentary approach is built to catch.
