The Moon and Sixpence

5W 1969 W. Somerset Maugham Notes The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham, published in 1919, is a novel inspired by the life of the French painter Paul Gauguin. The story follows Charles Strickland, a seemingly ordinary London stockbroker who abandons his family and comfortable life to pursue his passion for painting. Strickland's journey takes him from Europe to Tahiti, where he becomes consumed by his artistic vision, indifferent to the conventional moralities and relationships he leaves behind. The novel explores themes of artistic obsession, the conflict between societal expectations and personal fulfillment, and the sometimes destructive nature of genius. Maugham's portrayal of Strickland as a driven, uncompromising artist offers a complex and thought-provoking meditation on the sacrifices and costs of following one's true calling.
