The film was co-written by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Predator), whose signature blend of action and quotable dialogue shines through—particularly the immortal "Wolfman's got nards!" line. Despite bombing at the box office, The Monster Squad found passionate fans through cable television and home video who recognized it as a genuine classic. Stan Winston's creature designs updated the classic monsters beautifully, and the film's willingness to put children in genuine peril gives it an edge that sanitized modern family films often lack.
