From the very beginning, we have been trying to figure out a way to give back and the opportunity has just presented itself in the best possible way! The memories of my dad telling stories about all of his beloved horses growing up flooded my memory. My dad died in 2003, after a four year battle with colorectal cancer. I was 20 years old when he died, so I remember all of his stories, but the details are occassionally scattered. I love antiques and old pictures so I have tons of black and white pictures of him on horses and at horse shows showing off the many ribbons that he won. I knew that this would be the perfect opportunity for us to give back to something that means so much to me! As I recalled the names of some of his horses, I called my aunt and uncle to help with the details. We laughed as they told stories of him and different horses. I loved listening to them reminisce hilarious and heartwarming details and go back and forth on the names of each of the horses as they vividly described the personalities of each of them. “Jubilee” was a favorite among the three siblings and had quite a few tricks up his sleeve. From kneeling to pray, to playing hide-and-go-seek, and drinking Pepsi-cola out of a bottle, he definitely kept the kids entertained — until he threw my dad into a barbed wire fence. “Blaze” was another favorite with four white stocking feet and a beautiful white streak down the front of her nose. But, “Pedro’s Merry Maker” was Dad’s favorite. He was the most beautiful little Tennessee Walking Horse with the prettiest wavy mane and tail. And then it hit me. “Merry Maker Brown” would be the perfect color name for our belt. It’s the most beautiful lustrous brown leather, much like Dad’s Merry Maker. Having the opportunity to give back a portion of each belt sold to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s ongoing mission to support survivors and fight for a cure would be the perfect way to honor my dad’s memory. May it remind us all of the hope and gratitude that lives in each of us.
