The Knob Remembers

I took this photograph at the Knob in Falmouth, Massachusetts—one of my favorite places to witness the day's final light. As the sun surrendered to the horizon, the sky turned molten gold, lavender, and coral, casting its brilliance across the quiet bay. The silhouette of the bluff stood steady, as if accustomed  to welcoming such beauty night after night. There's a peace here that slows everything down—a reminder that endings can be just as sacred as beginnings, and that water, sky, and time have always known how to hold space for both. Poem: The Knob Remembers Long before camera lenses blinked or lovers carved initials in driftwood, the Knob stood quiet, watching ships whisper past her rocky arms, each tide a verse, each storm a chorus. She held the footprints of the Wampanoag, feet bare against pine-needled earth, gathering fish, shell, and sunlight, their songs rising with the gulls— stories rooted deeper than stone. In time, Frederick G. Bourne came, railroad tycoon with vision and wealth, a summer retreat on Quissett’s edge— he gifted the Knob as sanctuary, a public promise wrapped in granite. Winds have tested her shoulders since then, salt lacing the bones of her path, but she remains— a wild cathedral for all who wander seeking solitude, seeking sky. So stand where the sea meets memory, let your breath catch in the golden hush— for the Knob remembers everything: the prayers, the storms, the kisses, the laughter, and the light that always returns.
