The Hertz Field as Ecological Medium

Living in the Invisible Ocean We inhabit an invisible ocean of electromagnetic radiation, a complex, dynamic medium that shapes biological, technological, and cultural systems in profound ways. This presentation introduces the Hertz Field framework: a comprehensive model for understanding our electromagnetic environment through ecological metaphors that emphasize our role as residents rather than mere users. The Hertz field is simultaneously physical and informational, local and global, natural and constructed. It requires new forms of literacy, responsibility, and stewardship. Like any ecosystem, it can flourish with care or degrade through neglect and pollution. This framework offers practical tools for designers, researchers, and citizens seeking to navigate and improve our shared electromagnetic commons.
