The Heart Mender

The story centers around Helen Mason, a young widow living on the Gulf Coast, who is consumed by grief and resentment towards the Nazi regime that took her husband’s life. Her lonely existence is disrupted when Lt. Josef Landermann, a German U-Boat officer, washes ashore after being betrayed and left for dead. Initially filled with anger at the sight of his uniform, Helen's perspective shifts when she hears Josef utter a faint phrase that compels her to help him instead of leaving him to die.
