The Devils of Loudun

The Devils of Loudun Biblioteca Obscura No. 20 By Des Niau Few episodes in the history of witchcraft and demonic possession have provoked as much fascination as the Affair of Loudun. In seventeenth-century France, a community of Ursuline nuns claimed to be tormented by demons, public exorcisms attracted enormous crowds, and the parish priest Urbain Grandier was accused of sorcery, condemned for witchcraft, and burned alive. The Devils of Loudun by Des Niau presents one of the most important contemporary accounts of these extraordinary events, preserving the testimony, controversies, and religious fervor that transformed a provincial scandal into one of Europe's most infamous witchcraft cases. Drawing upon eyewitness observations, official proceedings, exorcisms, and contemporary reports, the author chronicles the alleged possessions that gripped the convent, the dramatic confrontations between exorcists and the supposed demons, the accusations directed against Grandier, and the political and religious forces that shaped the outcome of the trial. Through these events emerges a vivid portrait of an age in which faith, fear, power, and superstition became inseparable. More than a dramatic narrative of possession, this work provides a rare historical window into the realities of seventeenth-century France. It reveals how religious conflict, personal rivalries, judicial procedure, and belief in the supernatural combined to produce one of history's most extraordinary cases of alleged demonic possession. Professionally restored from the original edition, this volume preserves one of the essential primary sources documenting the Loudun possessions and the trial of Urbain Grandier. Why This Volume Matters The Loudun affair stands among the most significant episodes in the history of witchcraft, possession, and religious persecution. It has inspired generations of historians, theologians, psychologists, and writers, while serving as the basis for numerous books, plays, and films.
