The Celestial Order — Smith's Solar System with Leverrier & Herschel

The Celestial Order Smith's Solar System With Leverrier Herschel — Asa Smith's mid-century plate convenes the solar family in solemn procession, with Neptune, freshly conjured from Leverrier's mathematics, taking its place beside the Herschelian Uranus like a newcomer ushered into a cathedral. It is astronomy as catechism, the orbits drawn with the gravity of scripture. About the Source Bella Frye sources celestial prints from 19th-century astronomical atlases and selenographic studies — the era when astronomy was still natural philosophy, when Smith, Lord Rosse, Reynolds, and the Royal Astronomical Society's draftsmen rendered the heavens as both mathematical proposition and quiet wonder. The aged paper tone, the engraver's hand, and the original plate annotations are preserved in the print.
