The legend says that the Bennington flag was made in 1877 to commemorate the American Revolutionary Battle, The Battle of Bennington. It is believed that it was held by president Millard Fillmore whose grandfather, Nathanial Fillmore fought in the battle, as a result the flag is also referred to as "The Fillmore Flag".
