The American Dream

Bob Warhurst was not born into power or money, but grew into both with the strength of his ideas, hard work and unrelenting determination. His life reflects the rise of America after the Great Depression and World War II, celebrating the nation’s most singular gift to the world: the American Dream. It is a dream that says any man or woman can rise above the most humble beginnings to become successful in the competition called life. This book captures the amazing journey of a poor country boy with a heart of gold. Follow his adventures as he elevates himself and his family from heartbreaking poverty in Depression-era Alabama to become co-founder of Merrifield Garden Center, one of the nation’s leading independent garden centers. “He has a great story that I’m sure will be inspiring to many,” said Washington Redskins Hall of Fame Coach Joe Gibbs. Bob’s evolution from bricklayer to trash collector to captain of commerce was not always pretty and the odds were stacked against him, but that is also the history of this great nation. What we all can learn from Bob Warhurst is that the human spirit is indomitable and resilient, and that doing the right thing is the only thing to do. This is also the story of family and how unconditional love, dogged determination and tireless work can overcome the absence of formal education. And how Bob and his family stayed united in the face of a world that sometimes valued chicanery over honesty and financial connections over family ties. The Bob Warhurst story is a tale of America as it used to be and should be today. Join Bob Warhurst on his amazing journey through life and you’ll learn the true meaning of the American Dream.
