Edgar Allan Poe, "Alone" (written c. 1829, published 1875) "And all I lov'd—I lov'd alone—" Poe was around 20 when he wrote "Alone" — and he never published it. It was found after his death in a Baltimore socialite's commonplace book, in his handwriting, kept for 26 years before the world saw it. The poem is about a way of perceiving the world that was his from childhood — a prism that made everything arrive differently than it arrived for other people. This line is the pivot: not loneliness as condition, but as origin. This isn't a t-shirt. It's a confession from a 20-year-old who already knew. You're not the person who finds crowds lonely. You're the one who has always felt something arrive slightly differently — the beauty with an edge, the love that you experienced on your own terms even when you shared it. If you've ever: Found a piece of music devastating in a way you couldn't explain to anyone in the room Loved something — a place, a person, a book — and felt the love was somehow entirely yours, impossible to share whole Read a poem at 2am that described an experience you'd never seen named before This is for you. The Design The design staircases down — each line stepping further in, "alone—" arriving at the end of its own indentation, exactly where you'd expect it. The "lov'd" is period-standard poetic contraction. The em dashes are his. He put them there on purpose. Also on the The Alone Mug and The Alone Journal.
