Ten Knives Comics - Underexposed Innovators of Cinema: Pedro Almodovar

“Pedro Almodóvar is one of the most successful Spanish filmmakers of all time. From his provincial origins to his explosion onto the scene during La Movida Madrileña, the Spanish cultural renaissance of the 1980s, Almodóvar has charted a course as one of Spain's preeminent directors, all while living openly as a gay man. His films run the gamut from comedy to drama and every genre in between, and are populated with women and gay characters whom Almodóvar always depicts with empathy and compassion. His highly prolific career has garnered a cult following and is fertile ground for examining such themes as passion, survival, and family, with an ultimate focus on what it means to be free. Based on interviews, reviews, articles, and critical theory, Pedro Almodóvar: Desire gives you an introductory look at this living legend's remarkable oeuvre. Underexposed: Innovators of Cinema is a series that recognizes the creative legacies of woman and LGBTQ filmmakers throughout film history.” Bio: Maddie Weiner is a cartoonist, bookmaker, printmaker, and illustrator.
