Tempelhof Japanese White Pine

Tempelhof Japanese White Pine (Pinus parviflora 'Tempelhof')Tempelhof Japanese White Pine is a refined evergreen conifer that brings a calm, collected look to the landscape. Its compact size and soft needle texture make it easy to use as a long-term anchor in beds where you want year-round structure without heavy bulk. The cool-toned foliage pairs beautifully with stone, gravel, broadleaf evergreens, and flowering shrubs, helping plantings feel intentional in every season. If you want a specimen-style conifer with a composed habit and minimal upkeep, Tempelhof is a strong choice. Distinctive FeaturesThis Japanese white pine selection develops a dense, compact habit with needle-rich branching and a naturally sculptural silhouette. Needles often read blue-green, creating a cool, refined tone and a soft, layered texture that looks polished up close. The plant grows slowly and builds character over time, with branching that can become more expressive as it matures while still holding a tidy outline. Its main value is four-season structure and texture, offering evergreen presence that feels curated rather than ordinary. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun is best for dense growth and strongest needle color, with light shade tolerated. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and slightly acidic to neutral soils are a good match. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide deep watering during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: Slow growing and often reaching about 4 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide over time. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point where the compact, sculptural form and cool needle tone can be appreciated year-round. Conifer Gardens: Add to a conifer collection for refined texture and small-scale structure. Rock and Gravel Beds: Pair with stone and gravel mulch to highlight form and keep the look low-maintenance. Foundation Accents: Place near an entry or corner bed for evergreen presence in a tidy footprint. Japanese-Inspired Designs: Use with boulders and restrained plant palettes for a calm composition with a strong structural accent. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep evenly moist the first season, then water deeply during drought to reduce stress. Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture, keeping mulch off the trunk to prevent rot. Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood and refine outline if needed. Candle Control: Shorten spring candles if you want tighter growth and a more compact, dense outline. Site Selection: Choose a well-drained site and avoid low spots where water collects around the roots. Why Choose Tempelhof Japanese White Pine?
