Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress

Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Tempelhof')Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress is a compact evergreen conifer valued for its cupped foliage sprays, rounded to broadly conical habit, and refined year-round structure. Its yellow-tinted green foliage brings a soft, layered look to foundation beds, conifer gardens, rock gardens, containers, and small landscape spaces. This dwarf selection offers the classic texture of Hinoki Cypress in a more manageable form, making it useful where evergreen interest is needed without the size of a larger conifer. With full sun to partial shade, moist well-drained soil, and protection from severe drought or harsh drying wind, Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress brings polished texture and dependable structure to carefully designed landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesTempelhof Hinoki Cypress forms a compact evergreen with rich green to yellow-green cupped foliage sprays and a dense, rounded to broadly ovate outline. The plant often lacks a strong central leader, giving it a softer, more sculptural habit than narrow pyramidal Hinoki Cypress selections. In colder weather, the foliage may develop a bronze or brownish cast, adding seasonal depth while maintaining evergreen structure. This cultivar is grown primarily for its foliage texture, compact habit, and year-round form, with cones rarely contributing significant ornamental value in managed landscapes. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with bright light supporting dense growth and partial shade helpful in hot or exposed locations. Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and performs poorly in constantly wet, compacted, or very dry conditions. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to prevent stress and foliage browning. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8, with best performance in protected sites that avoid harsh drying winds and extreme heat. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 4 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in many landscapes, with larger size possible over time in favorable conditions. Habit: Forms a dwarf, compact evergreen conifer with a rounded to broadly ovate or conical habit and dense cupped foliage sprays. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a compact evergreen focal point in foundation beds, entry gardens, courtyard plantings, rock gardens, conifer collections, or mixed borders where its layered texture can stand out year-round. Container Planting: Grow in a well-drained decorative container where its compact form, cupped foliage, and year-round color can be enjoyed up close. Foundation Planting: Use near low foundations, entry walks, or small beds where a compact evergreen can add structure without blocking views or windows. Conifer Garden: Pair with dwarf pines, spruces, junipers, golden conifers, and other Hinoki Cypress selections for contrast in color, form, and texture. Mixed Border: Combine with broadleaf evergreens, ornamental grasses, low perennials, and flowering shrubs for year-round structure and soft evergreen texture. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first few seasons to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed. Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the trunk. Pruning: Prune only lightly to remove dead tips or maintain shape, avoiding hard cuts into old bare wood that may not regrow well. Drainage: Avoid wet, compacted, or poorly drained sites because this compact conifer needs good drainage for healthy root growth. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a light to moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth. Site Protection: Plant where it has good air movement but some protection from harsh winter wind, reflected heat, and severe drought stress. Why Choose Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress? Cupped Foliage: Displays rich green to yellow-green cupped sprays that create a refined, layered evergreen texture. Compact Form: Stays more manageable than larger Hinoki Cypress selections, making it useful in smaller landscape spaces. Seasonal Depth: May develop bronze tones in winter for added cool-season interest while retaining evergreen structure. Soft Sculptural Habit: Forms a rounded to broadly conical outline that adds structure without looking rigid or overly formal. Versatile Placement: Works well as a specimen, container conifer, foundation accent, conifer garden feature, or mixed-border evergreen. Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress is an excellent choice for gardeners who want compact evergreen structure with refined texture and subtle seasonal color. Its cupped foliage sprays, dense rounded habit, manageable size, and year-round presence make it a polished option for foundations, containers, conifer collections, rock gardens, and small landscape spaces with moist well-drained soil.
