Tarpon Trap

The Tarpon Trap is built for one thing—getting eaten when everything else gets followed. This pattern combines a slow, breathing rabbit strip profile with a buggy, water-moving head that gives tarpon a target they can’t ignore, especially in pressured or off-color conditions. Tied on a Gamakatsu SL12S #2 hook The defining feature is the Crab Trap dubbing head, which creates a dense, lifelike profile that pushes water and collapses naturally on the pause. Paired with a flowing rabbit strip tail, this fly stays alive in the water whether you’re stripping it hard or barely moving it at all. It’s a controlled, natural presentation that keeps fish tracking and commits them to the eat. The lighter bead chain setup allows the Tarpon Trap to swim instead of drop, making it ideal for shallow flats, laid-up fish, and situations where a softer landing and slower sink rate matter. It’s a pattern that fishes in the strike zone longer and gives tarpon more time to react. Built for real-world conditions, this is a confidence fly when fish are following but not committing. Strip it steady, pause it, or crawl it—the movement does the work.
