The Target Mandarin is a compact, highly ornamental saltwater fish recognized for its psychedelic pattern of green, blue, orange, and black circular markings. Its flattened body, large pectoral fins, and deliberate hopping movement across rockwork give it a completely different presence from most marine aquarium fish. Reaching only about 2.75 inches, it remains small, but its specialized feeding requirements make it best suited to mature, well-established reef aquariums. Synchiropus picturatus, also known as the Picturesque Dragonet or Spotted Mandarin, is native to the Indo-West Pacific, including the Philippines, eastern Indonesia, and northwestern Australia. In nature, it inhabits shallow sheltered reefs, sandy bottoms, and rubble beneath living coral, where it feeds continuously on small benthic invertebrates. Its peaceful temperament, small adult size, and exceptional coloration make it a desirable reef aquarium fish. However, success depends heavily on providing a mature system with abundant natural microfauna or ensuring the individual reliably accepts prepared foods. Quick Care Guide Care Level: Moderate to Expert Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons Temperament: Peaceful Diet: Carnivore / Micro-predator Reef Safe: Yes Region: Indo-West Pacific, including the Philippines, eastern Indonesia, and northwestern Australia Scientific Name: Synchiropus picturatus Tank Requirements Provide a mature, established reef aquarium with substantial live rock, rubble zones, and sheltered areas where the Target Mandarin can forage continuously. A healthy population of copepods and other small crustaceans is particularly valuable, especially for specimens that have not fully transitioned to prepared foods. Rockwork should offer plenty of surface area and small crevices while leaving open areas of sand or rubble along the bottom. This species spends most of its time close to the substrate and reef structure rather than swimming extensively through open water. Gentle to moderate flow is appropriate in areas where the fish feeds. Strong filtration and stable water quality are important, but excessively aggressive flow across the entire aquarium may make feeding more difficult. Diet and Feeding The Target Mandarin is a specialized carnivore that naturally feeds on very small benthic invertebrates. In the wild, it spends much of the day picking tiny prey from reef rubble, sand, and rock surfaces. A mature aquarium with a substantial copepod population provides an important natural food source. Captive specimens may also accept enriched live brine shrimp, frozen copepods, small mysis shrimp, finely chopped frozen foods, and specialized small-particle marine diets. Prepared foods should be offered close to the bottom where the fish naturally feeds. Multiple small feedings can be beneficial, particularly for individuals that readily consume frozen foods. Temperament and Tankmates The Target Mandarin is peaceful and generally ignores most other reef fish. It is best housed with calm community species that will not constantly outcompete it for food. Suitable tankmates include gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, peaceful wrasses, firefish, and other non-aggressive reef species. Very aggressive or extremely fast-feeding tankmates can make it difficult for mandarins to receive adequate nutrition. Males may become territorial toward other male dragonets. A compatible male and female may sometimes be maintained together in a suitable mature aquarium, but multiple males should generally be avoided. Reef Compatibility The Target Mandarin is considered reef safe. It does not normally damage corals, clams, or ornamental reef invertebrates. Its feeding behavior is directed toward tiny crustaceans and other microfauna living among rockwork, rubble, and substrate. Because it consumes copepods and similar organisms, it may compete with other specialized microfauna feeders such as certain dragonets and pod-dependent wrasses. Water Parameters Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH Maintain stable water conditions and avoid rapid swings in temperature, salinity, or pH. Mature biological stability is especially important for this species. Common Considerations Specialized feeding needs: A mature copepod population can be critical for specimens that do not reliably accept prepared foods. Slow feeder: Fast or aggressive tankmates may consume food before the mandarin has an opportunity to feed. Small adult size: Adults reach only about 2.75 inches, but feeding ecology rather than body size is the primary husbandry challenge. Mature reef preferred: Established live rock and rubble provide both natural prey and continuous foraging opportunities. Male compatibility: Avoid keeping multiple males together unless the system is exceptionally large and their behavior can be closely monitored.
