Tabor Hill Classic Demi-Sec White

Tabor Hill Classic Demi-Sec White is a semi-sweet white wine blend from Michigan's Lake Michigan Shore AVA, bottled at 12% ABV in a standard 750ml format. A multi-gold-medal winner — including golds at both the Indy International Wine Competition and the Los Angeles International Wine Competition — this is Tabor Hill Winery's flagship bottling, famously served at the White House and consistently recognized as the winery's most popular release. Quick Facts: ABV: 12%  |  Origin: Lake Michigan Shore AVA, Michigan, USA  |  Style: Demi-Sec (Semi-Sweet) White Blend  |  Winery: Tabor Hill Winery, Buchanan, MI Production & Heritage Tabor Hill Winery operates in Buchanan, Michigan, situated within the Lake Michigan Shore American Viticultural Area — a region whose temperate microclimate, moderated by the lake, supports aromatic cool-climate varietals. The Classic Demi-Sec White is a proprietary blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Vidal, and Vignoles, combining classic European wine grapes with French-American hybrids well-suited to the region's growing conditions. Described by the winery as "by far our most popular wine," this expression has earned a reputation as their most consistent award winner and was notably a familiar selection at the White House. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with a fruity mix of ripe apple and pear, followed by subtle floral hints that point to the Gewürztraminer component. Citrus and a whisper of tropical fruit round out the bouquet. Taste: The palate enters soft and fruit-forward, with baked apple and succulent pear dominating the early impression. At mid-palate, pineapple and citrus flavors emerge alongside a balanced interplay of sweetness and bright acidity. The demi-sec style keeps residual sugar present but measured, never cloying. Finish: The finish is clean and moderately short, with lingering pear and a gentle floral fade. A refreshing citrus note keeps the close crisp and inviting. How to Drink the Classic Demi-Sec Well chilled — around 45°F — is the ideal serve, allowing the aromatic complexity of the Gewürztraminer and Riesling to express without excess sweetness. It also works beautifully over ice on warm days. In a White Wine Spritzer, the fruit-forward profile and natural acidity hold up well against soda water and a citrus twist. For a Sangria Blanca, the pear and apple notes integrate seamlessly with sliced stone fruit and fresh herbs. And in an Aperol Spritz variation — substituting this blend for Prosecco — the added body and tropical character create a richer, more layered aperitif. Best For Introducing someone to Michigan wines with a crowd-pleasing, award-winning example Warm-weather porch sipping or picnic outings Pairing with spicy Asian cuisine or holiday appetizer spreads Gifting wine enthusiasts curious about Lake Michigan Shore AVA wines Frequently Asked Questions What does Tabor Hill Classic Demi-Sec taste like? It delivers ripe apple, pear, and pineapple flavors balanced by bright citrus acidity and delicate floral notes. The semi-sweet style is fruit-driven and refreshing rather than heavy or syrupy. How does the Classic Demi-Sec compare to an off-dry Riesling? While a standalone off-dry Riesling typically leans on petrol, mineral, and single-varietal citrus character, Tabor Hill's blend layers in Gewürztraminer's floral spice and the body of Vidal and Vignoles, producing a rounder, more tropical profile. The multi-grape approach yields broader fruit complexity at a similar sweetness level. Is the Classic Demi-Sec good for beginners? Yes — its approachable sweetness, moderate 12% ABV, and familiar fruit flavors make it an excellent entry point for new wine drinkers or those transitioning from sweeter beverages. Where is Tabor Hill Classic Demi-Sec made? It is produced at Tabor Hill Winery in Buchanan, Michigan, within the Lake Michigan Shore AVA, one of Michigan's most established winegrowing regions benefiting from lake-effect climate moderation. What foods pair well with the Classic Demi-Sec? Thai green curry — the wine's sweetness tempers the heat; aged Gouda or Gruyère — the semi-sweet fruit contrasts rich, nutty cheese; grilled shrimp with mango salsa — tropical notes mirror the wine's pineapple character; roasted pork loin with apple glaze — echoing the wine's dominant baked apple flavor; fresh fruit tarts — pear and citrus in the glass complement the dessert without overwhelming it. What sizes does the Classic Demi-Sec come in? Tabor Hill Classic Demi-Sec White is available in the standard 750ml bottle format. Is the Classic Demi-Sec worth the price? It positions as an accessible, value-tier white blend that consistently outperforms its price point at competition — earning gold medals at international wine competitions and an 87/100 from Tastings.com (September 2022), which is strong for a wine at this level. Why the Classic Demi-Sec? Few domestic semi-sweet white blends carry this depth of competition credentials — gold medals from both the Indy International Wine Competition and the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, plus recognition at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. The four-grape blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Vidal, and Vignoles is distinctive in the American wine landscape, marrying Old World aromatics with hybrid grape resilience suited to Michigan's climate. Its history of being served at the White House lends cultural cachet that most wines in this style and price range simply cannot claim. For anyone seeking a genuinely award-validated, easy-drinking white that represents the best of the Lake Michigan Shore AVA, this remains the benchmark bottling.
