Why work mats matter for focus and independence In a Montessori environment, defined boundaries help a child organize movement and attention. A work mat marks the edges of an activity the way a table setting marks a place: materials stay contained, the child can see where the work begins and ends, and cleanup has a clear visual cue. This supports two Montessori practical life aims — care of the environment and development of concentration through repeated, purposeful movement. Color-coding the mats to the activity (such as a blue mat and apron for polishing) provides an additional scaffold that makes it easy to keep things organized.  What's included Each all cotton mat is made from the same cotton fabric as our cloth aprons. Choose your size: Small (Primary, approx. 11" L x 17" W) Medium (Elementary, approx. 15" L x 20" W)  Choose your color 100% cotton — soft and breathable Double-sided fabric (a Maitri label is affixed to one side, so mats are double-sided but not fully reversible) Easy to wash (hand or machine wash cold, hang dry) Handcrafted in our rural New England workshop. Practical Life is one of the core areas of the Montessori classroom.
