Tab Laced Turnshoes 18" Doll Shoe Pattern

Turnshoes were a common shoe style in the Middle Ages.  They were so named because they were assembled inside out, and turned right side out once they were finished. The turnshoe in this pattern has a one-piece upper with side tabs that fasten in the front with shoe laces or ribbon.  The shoe is unlined and the exposed edges can be finished by hand or machine with topstitching or edgestitching or left unfinished, if preferred.  These shoes look best when made with a lightweight sheep skin leather (the kind generally used to make leather jackets and gloves), but can be made with other medium weight fabrics such as felt, vinyl, or woven fabrics that have been stabilized with fusible interfacing or other fabric treatments.  Much like the very similar Native American mocassins, their timeless design makes them a good choice for modern day wear as well. This pattern includes a bonus stocking pattern! This PDF sewing pattern by Thimbles and Acorns is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.
