As a group, brainstorm 30+ acts of kindness, write them on individual slips of paper, and place then in a jar. Each day, kids pull out an idea and incorporate that act of kindness throughout their day. Get creative! Ideas could include quick acts like sharing a kind word, smiling, and greeting others, as well as acts that may take longer such as being a book buddy or making thank-you cards. Write Appreciation Letters – Explore gratitude, practice drawing and writing skills, and make someone's day! Ask kids to think of an adult such as a teacher, parent, bus driver, grandparent, or babysitter who is important to them. Then, have them write a note or draw a picture that tells this person why they're grateful for them. Letters can be delivered in person or mailed. For extra fun, write letters to classmates and friends! What Does a Welcoming Space Look Like? – Ask your students to imagine what a welcoming classroom looks, sounds, and feels like. Label columns on chart paper or a whiteboard with these three headers. Answers could include smiling, sharing kind comments, raising hands for questions, practicing good manners, and "comfortable" or "safe." Brainstorm together, and provide helpful hints or ask questions to spark ideas. Review the suggestions, then decide as a group what you want to make sure to include in your classroom. Post your answers for reference throughout the year! Smile Chain – Hand out colored strips of paper. Have everyone write something that makes them smile on one or more of the slips. Once finished, create a paper chain by looping all the slips together. Display the chain where all can admire and read what makes others smile. Colored with Empathy – Ask kids to draw a face or person that feels welcoming and inviting to them using their favorite colored crayons or pencils. Once completed, display their art around the room to learn about what kinds of facial features or postures are most welcoming to each student.
