Scooter Dragonet - Philippines

Synchiropus ocellatus The Scooter Dragonet, also known as the Ocellated Dragonet, is a striking and intricately patterned reef fish. Its mottled brown and tan body is highlighted with white and black blotches, and males display a sail-like dorsal fin with an orange base. Growing to about 3 inches, this small but visually captivating fish adds unique color and movement to marine aquariums. In the wild, Scooter Dragonets are found throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from southern Japan to the Marquesas Islands, typically inhabiting sandy areas of lagoons and seaward reefs at depths of 1–30 meters. They are bottom-dwelling and often form small, loose groups. While peaceful and non-aggressive, they are slow feeders and can be outcompeted for food in densely populated tanks. In the aquarium, Scooter Dragonets require a well-established tank with abundant live rock and a thriving copepod population. They prefer sandy substrates and plenty of hiding spaces, which help them feel secure and allow natural foraging behavior. These fish may gradually accept frozen or pelletized foods, but patience is essential. Generally considered reef-safe, Scooter Dragonets do not harm corals or most invertebrates. When provided with proper tank conditions, adequate hiding places, and careful attention to feeding, their intricate patterns, active behavior, and unique presence make them a rewarding choice for experienced marine aquarists.
