In the spring, shrubs begin to emerge from dormancy with swelling buds and potentially new growth as temperatures rise and daylight hours increase. Most dormant shrubs start leafing out in April, depending on the specific plant and local weather conditions. Care: Best in full sun or light shade, keep base and roots completely shaded. "Feet in the shade, head in the sun" is a saying you may have heard for successfully growing clematis, so plant it where the vine gets sunshine, but the roots stay cool. You can accomplish this with mulch, or by shading the root zone with a nearby shrub or perennial. Hard prune to 2 feet in spring as new growth emerges. Leave at least two pairs of buds on each stem.  Fertilize with Proven Winners Continuous Release Plant Food in spring and mid-summer.
