Swaps was a famous California-bred thoroughbred whose fans nicknamed him The California Comet. With Willie Shoemaker aboard, Swaps won the 1955 Kentucky Derby, along with a host of other big-name races, despite a recurring hoof ailment. He had an intense, fan-pleasing rivalry with the horse Nashua, often trading wins as they raced against each other repeatedly. Swaps was named Horse of the Year as a 4-year-old in 1956, but ended the year with a near-fatal leg fracture. His owners fought to save him by casting the leg and keeping him stalled. When he re-injured the cast leg not long after, the owners of his rival Nashua had a custom-made sling sent to him with their wishes for a solid recovery. It worked, and Swaps healed! He then retired to stud. [Swaps with a groom - Photo source unknown] Breyer's portrait of Swaps was sculpted by Maureen Love, originally for Hagen Renaker. Breyer carried it in his chestnut coat with diagonal socks and tiny star, from 1975-1990. This fellow is Factory Mint with bright whites and a pretty face. He even comes with his original box! Size: Classic Breyer Model #604
